019 Tommy Drumm (1983)
In 1983 Dublin beat Galway in one of the most remarkable and controversial All-Ireland Finals. During the course of a tough, uncompromising match, Dublin had three players sent off (Brian Mullins, Ray Hazley, and Ciaran Duff) and Tomas Tierney was sent off for Galway. Despite playing for most of the match with only twelve men, Dublin held on to win by two points. The players were dubbed ‘the Twelve Apostles’ by their fans. Despite the controversy surrounding the match, the achievement of the 1983 Dublin team must rank as one of the most impressive performances in the history of All-Ireland Finals. This photo shows Dublin Captain Tommy Drumm at the Mansion House with Lord Mayor Michael Keating.
This is one of a selection of photographs from the Dublin City Council Photographic Collection celebrating the proud sporting heritage of Dublin.
