Norah and her Kerry Cow Anonymous

London, Religious Tract Society, c. 1880

As was common with the publications of the Religious Tract Society, Norah and her Kerry Cow is not attributed to any author, although it is noted that the book is by the author of Johnny McKay and The Sovereign. These handsomely illustrated and carefully produced books were printed with the specific aim of improving the morals of children, especially poor female children; therefore it is no surprise that the heroine of this book is a poor female child, and Irish to boot. The subtitle of the book is “Or, the Bible is the best guide.” The Religious Tract Society was founded in London in 1799 and continued its evangelical work up until 1935.
