History of the City of Dublin from the earliest accounts to the present time. London, T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1818

The Rev. Robert Walsh was part of the British Embassy staff in St Petersburg in 1826 when he presented an edition of the History of the City of Dublin to the Emperor Francis I of Austria. In return was awarded a medal of honour by him, and this is the letter which accompanies the medal. The Special Collections also hold the book which was presented to the Emperor. It is an especially grangerised edition, with 101 engraved plates, many from Brooking’s Map of Dublin. The letter from the Emperor accompanying the medal is illustrated here.

For more books by James Whitelaw, consult the Dublin City Libraries catalogue.
