Group of Gymnasts, taken from: Souvenir of the Artane Industrial School Dublin Dublin [1905]

This souvenir booklet was produced to raise funds for and publicise the work done by the Christian Brothers in St Joseph’s Industrial School, Artane. The school was opened in 1870 with the aim of caring for neglected, orphaned and abandoned Roman Catholic boys, and it operated as an industrial school until its closure in 1969. By this time over 800 boys lived in the school. This pamphlet puts forward the school as progressive and successful, but the pervasive sense of unrelenting regimentation in the photographs gives a strong  impression of the bleak environment these children lived in.
