Christmas Games
Illustrated London News, 19th December 1857
The tradition of playing games at Christmas was very popular in Victorian Britain, especially among those attending house parties in the more affluent echelons of society. This particular game seems to have been designed to be played at the dining table, with different people playing the parts of dining utensils and dishes. The forfeits, which included kissing the female members of the party, having one’s face slapped and being pursued and beaten with handkerchiefs all around the room seem to indicate that the games were popularly used for the purposes of flirtation between the sexes.
