Halloween 07

Kilmainham Gaol Image taken from The Dublin Penny Journal, Jan. 9th 1836

The jail at Kilmainham must be one of the most atmospheric places in Dublin, home of  the spirits of the many men, women and children incarcerated and in some case executed there. Various reports of ghostly footsteps and cold winds have been recounted through the years and the stone-breakers yard, where so many executions were held, is said to be especially eerie. The jail was built in 1789, and some of the major names in Irish history were held here, including Robert Emmet and Sarah Curran, Charles Stewert Parnell (albeit in rather more comfort than most of the detainees), the leaders of the 1916 Rising – who were executed here – and many other Republicans, male and female, during the period of the War of Independence.
