Advertisement for Tommy Burns  from The Irish Coursing and Greyhound Racing Annual 1942

Dublin, 1942

One might ask if there is a post-modernist element to this advertisement, with its confident assertion that for Tommy Burns it is “Always a Pleasure to Pay!” But a trip to the dogs has been a night out in Dublin since Shelbourne Park and Harold’s Cross both opened dog tracks in 1927. The Yearbook of 1942 contains advertisement for a number of bookmakers who seemed to work both the tracks.
